Instructions for Making A Bereavement Layette
(Bonnet, Pouch, Blanket)

Bonnet

Materials:
eyelet lace fabric, preferably 100% cotton (need ~8” square)
white lining, preferably 100% cotton (need ~8” square)
pre-ruffled 1/2” lace, (need ~1/2 yd.)
ribbon, white, narrow (need 16")
Serger settings: 3.5 X; 3.5 L; 3-thread overlock

If you use a pre-finished edge lace, follow these instructions:

1.        Cut lace fabric from pattern.

2.       Cut two ribbon ties from narrow ribbon.  Cut each ribbon 8” long.  Tie half knot at one end of each ribbon.
      

3.       Fold along the fold line and stitch/serge the seam on each side of the bonnet; thread serged thread ends back through the seam.
 

4.       Lay pre-ruffled lace over serged seam with lace facing away from the bonnet.  Sew (with decorative stitch and iridescent thread) pre-ruffled lace over serged edge, folding under the beginning and ending edges of the pre-ruffled lace.

5.       Fold under the raw end of one of the ribbon ties.  Sew ribbon on bottom front corner of bonnet.  Sew other ribbon on other side of bonnet.

If you use an eyelet lace with a lining, follow these instructions:

1.        Cut eyelet lace and lining fabrics from pattern.

2.       Cut two ribbon ties from narrow ribbon.  Cut each ribbon 8” long.  Tie half knot at one end of each ribbon.

3.       Lay eyelet lace over lining fabric and match edges.  Fold both fabrics along the fold line and stitch/serge the seam; thread serged thread ends back through the seam.  Stitch seam on other side.

4.       Sew/serge around the raw edge of the bonnet; thread serged thread ends back through the seam.

5.       Lay pre-ruffled lace over serged seam with lace facing away from the bonnet.  Sew (with decorative stitch and iridescent thread)  pre-ruffled lace over serged edge, mitering the corners.

6.       Fold under the raw end of one of the ribbon ties.  Sew ribbon on bottom front corner of bonnet.  Sew other ribbon on other side of bonnet.

Pouch

Materials:
eyelet lace fabric, preferably 100% cotton (need 10” or 12” square)
white lining, preferably 100% cotton (need 10” or 12” square)
pre-ruffled 1/2” lace, (for 10”: 1 2/3 yds.; for 12”: 2 yds.)
ribbon, white, narrow (64" for both 10" and 12" square)
Decorative stitch: featherstitch on Baby Lock Decorator's Choice: 6.0-7.0 W; 4.0 L

1.        Cut eyelet lace and lining fabrics from pattern pieces (either 10” or 12” squares and triangles).
 

2.       Cut two ribbon ties from narrow ribbon.  Cut each ribbon 24” long.  Tie half knot at both ends of each ribbon.
 

3.       Serge the eyelet lace and lining together on the long edge of the trianglar piece.

4.       Lay pre-ruffled lace over serged seam with lace facing away from the triangle.  Sew (with decorative stitch and iridescent thread) pre-ruffled lace over serged edge.

5.       Place triangle with lace edge over square of eyelet lace and lining, wrong side of triangle facing the right side of the square.  Serge all edges together on four sides of square; thread serged thread ends back through the seam.
 

6.       Repeat step #3 above and sew (with decorative stitch and iridescent thread) pre-ruffled lace around all four sides of square, mitering the corners.
 

7.       Tie small bow in center of each 24” ribbon.

8.       Stitch down the bow on the corners of the triangle, through all thicknesses of ribbon and pouch.
 
Placement of bows:
10”: 2” from corner
12”: 3” from corner

Blanket

Materials:
eyelet lace fabric, preferably 100% cotton (17”-24” square)
pre-ruffled 1/2” lace, (for 10”: 1 2/3 yds.; for 12”: 2 yds.)

1.        Cut eyelet.  Serge around all raw edges (all four sides); thread serged thread ends back through the seam.
 

2.       Lay pre-ruffled lace over serged seam with lace facing away from the blanket.  Sew (with decorative stitch and iridescent thread) pre-ruffled lace over serged edge, mitering the corners.
